Cross-table shot: look at layout and speed together

On a cross-table shot that goes back and forth between the long rails, check ball spacing, entry direction and speed separately.

One thing to remember today

Before hitting harder, check whether your layout matches the source.

A cross-table shot is a path that goes back and forth between the facing long rails. This lesson says to look at the layout and cue speed together rather than at a fixed formula. Watch the direction the cue ball heads after hitting the first object ball and the direction it comes off the cushion, and practice not judging the cause from the final score alone.

1. Start with the original scene

2. Sum it up in a diagram and check the conditions

Object balls
In the example at 2:00, the first object ball is about one ball off the long rail, and the second object ball is frozen to the short rail. The two object balls are shown about one rail diamond apart sideways.
Cue ball slope
The source describes the line from the cue ball to the first object ball as a slope of about 3 diamonds. This is a reference on the source's table, not a fixed angle or travel-distance formula for every cross-table shot.
Thickness and tip position
Look at the line and spin direction at 6:00 together with the actual stroke scene. Don't pick a number of tips or a thickness from one line alone.
Speed
At 4:00 the source compares shots that are too slow and too fast. Gather results with the same layout, thickness and tip position, then change only the speed a little.

3. Follow the steps

  1. Compare the three balls with the source

Pause at 2:00 and record even the gaps between the balls and the cushions. If an object ball is frozen to the cushion in one and off it in the other, it is not the same example.

  2. Count the cushion order

Check in what order the cue ball passes the facing long rails after hitting the first object ball. Keep the rail diamonds apart from the actual cushion contact points.

  3. Shoot 5 times at a reference speed

Keep thickness, tip position and ball positions the same. Write down the first and third cushion positions, and record separately whether the ball stopped early.

  4. Change only the speed a little and compare

Shoot 5 more on the same layout. If it changed a lot from the first cushion, your thickness or tip position may have changed too. Don't conclude that shot compares speed alone.

Thinking a cross-table shot just needs hitting hard

The source compares both too slow and too fast. Look not only at whether the ball got there, but at the cushion contact points and how the spin responds.

Recording back-and-forth practice with no object balls as scoring

Going back and forth with just the cue ball is warm-up practice. An actual 3-cushion score needs both object balls and the required cushion contacts.

4. Cross-table reference speed A/B, 5 shots each

Shots 1–5: On one layout from the source, repeat with consistent thickness, tip position and speed.

Shots 6–10: Change only the speed a little and compare whether it reaches the same target section.

Speed is not standardized as a number. Don't stretch the results of 5 shots into a law for every table.

Record "done" when the ball arrives in the third long-rail section you set. Note scoring, stopping and first-cushion error separately.

Tap a number to cycle: not recorded → hit → needs work.
