Practice

Watch the layout and the motion, then make it your own practice.
Choose a path, try it yourself, and change the next shot.

Start by choosing a route

Five basic routes

Practice the paths you learned in Basics. Each route has something to watch for and two sets of 5 shots. TTBoys designed these drills; they are not fixed thickness or tip-position formulas that work for every layout.

Basic route 1

Side around

The classic long → short → long family. Don’t fix the thickness from the name alone; also look at the gap between the first object ball and the long rail.

Today's goal
Send the ball to the target zone on the first cushion again and again

Show the 10-shot drill and log
  1. Shots 1–5: Pick one reference layout from the side around video guide below and repeat it. Set a target zone on the first cushion and write down where the ball actually hits.
  2. Shots 6–10: Keep the ball layout, tip position and speed the same. Only when the first-cushion error keeps falling on the same side, change the aim slightly and compare.

If the first cushion is already off, don’t change your power by watching only the last ball. Compare thickness and aim first.

Done when the ball enters the first-cushion zone you set in advance. Note whether you scored separately.

Basic route 2

Back around

Many layouts come back long through long → short → long. The first object ball moves too, so check the cue ball’s path and the object ball’s path together to avoid a kiss.

Today's goal
Watch whether the cue ball and the first object ball meet again

Show the 10-shot drill and log
  1. Shots 1–5: Pick one layout from the back around guide below. Before the shot, say which way the first object ball will move, and after the shot watch whether it meets the cue ball again.
  2. Shots 6–10: With the same layout, thickness and tip position, change only the speed by one step. Record separately whether a kiss happened and whether the ball reached the last ball.

Hitting harder does not always make the kiss go away. Check where and when the two balls meet.

Done when you confirm that the first object ball moved the way you predicted before the shot. Record kisses and scoring separately.

Basic route 3

Front around

Plan a path that comes around the near corner. Not every front around is played with ‘1/2 thickness and no English’. Check the reference line for that layout first.

Today's goal
Compare the cushion order you set before the shot with the actual path

Show the 10-shot drill and log
  1. Shots 1–5: Pick one layout from the front around guide below. Standing at the table, say the first, second and third cushions in order, then compare with the actual path.
  2. Shots 6–10: In the same layout, also set a target zone on the first cushion. Check whether you sent the ball to the planned first cushion rather than whether you scored.

Don’t fix the thickness or tip position just because it is called a front around. Check the conditions of that layout in the source first.

Done when the first, second and third cushions you predicted match the actual path.

Basic route 4

Thin cut

Uses the cue ball’s path after cutting the object ball. Saying ‘hit it thin’ does not decide the cushion order by itself. Also tell a short path apart from an around-the-table path.

Today's goal
Keep the thickness constant and compare the first-cushion position

Show the 10-shot drill and log
  1. Shots 1–5: In the thin-cut around-the-table scenes of the match review guide below, find the cue ball, the two object balls and the first cushion. Choose one layout to repeat and a reference thickness.
  2. Shots 6–10: Keep the layout, tip position and speed, and repeat with the reference thickness. Record the first-cushion position and the direction the first object ball moves.

Don’t memorize the thin cut as a shot you always hit as thin as possible. Compare the thickness the layout needs with where the ball arrives.

Done when you keep the chosen thickness and the ball enters the first-cushion target zone.

Basic route 5

Cross-table shot

A path that goes back and forth between the facing long rails. Count the cushion contacts, but set the actual thickness and tip position for the ball layout.

Today's goal
Learn the back-and-forth order between the facing long rails

Show the 10-shot drill and log
  1. Shots 1–5: Start with just the cue ball and no object balls. Send it so it hits the facing long rails in turn, and count the actual contacts as 1, 2, 3.
  2. Shots 6–10: Repeat with the same starting spot, aim and tip position. Record the zone where the ball arrives on the third long-rail contact and check that the speed is enough and the direction repeats.

Going back and forth without object balls is a warm-up for learning the path, not 3-cushion scoring practice. In a real shot, the direction and spin after the object ball contact are added.

Done when the ball hits the long rails three times in turn and arrives in the third-cushion zone you set in advance.

How were the videos chosen?

From 양빵당구, we chose 3 of the 5 most popular videos on the channel's Videos tab that work as beginner drills. From 방수좋아 당구TV, we added 3 lessons on different topics from its 9 most popular videos. The first 4 were chosen for recent activity and their focus on basic lessons. The list as a whole is not a popularity ranking across channels. Checked: 2026-10-10.

Each guide shows the original, the scene times and what was checked. The diagrams and 10-shot drills were made separately by TTBoys; they are not the creators' official material or sponsored content.
