Front around 1234: start by reading the reference layout

In a popular front-around lesson, read the calculation numbers, the actual thickness and the tip position drawing separately, then repeat one layout.

For beginners · about 20 min of practice · Based on a video by 양빵당구

One thing to remember today

Keep the numbers used in the calculation apart from the thickness you actually hit.

This is Yangbbang Billiards' lesson on the front-around "jejari" (in-place) system. "Jejari" is not an instruction to stop the ball where it is; it names the return reference the source defines. Rather than memorizing the 1234 in the title first, look at the positions of the cue ball (your ball), the first object ball (the ball you hit first) and the second object ball (the last ball) together with the tip position and thickness marks on the right side of the screen. This drill focuses on repeating one layout from the source on your own table.

1. Start with the original scene

The scene buttons jump to the times we checked. Keep watching for the full explanation and the actual shot.

2. Sum it up in a diagram and check the conditions

A TTBoys concept diagram for learning. It is not a measured drawing of the original layout or a physical trajectory; check the exact layout and stroke in the video above.
Layout
First check the three balls and their distances from the cushions at 1:15. If you place only one ball roughly right, you end up with a different layout from the source.
Thickness
4/8 is the thickness where half the diameter overlaps; 3/8 is thinner than that. Don't read the numbers in the formula directly as eighths of ball thickness.
Tip position
In each scene, check both the up-down position and the left-right direction on the ball drawing on the right. Don't mix the conditions from 1:15 and 4:00.
Power and stroke
At 4:00 there is a stroke label reading "tuk" (a light tap). Watch the motion through, but don't convert it into a fixed power number, and don't grab and stop the cue abruptly.

3. Follow the steps

  1. Pick just one scene first

Start at 1:15 and note where the three balls sit relative to the rail diamonds. The gap between neighboring diamonds is one diamond. Also note whether each ball is frozen to the cushion or off it.

  2. Write down calculation and stroke separately

Put the calculation shown at 1:30 in a separate column, and record the actual thickness as "4/8" and the tip position as the ball drawing. A negative number in the formula does not mean "hit with negative thickness." Check what that number means together with the source's explanation that follows.

  3. Watch up to the first cushion first

See which section of the first cushion the cue ball goes to after hitting the first object ball. At first, check whether it keeps entering this section, rather than whether it hit the last ball.

  4. Shoot 5 times under the same conditions

Put the balls back in the same spots each time and keep thickness, tip position and power the same. Don't add spin right after one miss; note whether the first-cushion error gathers on the same side.

  5. Start a new set for the other example

When you move on to the 3/8 example at 4:00, read the layout and tip position again too. Don't treat it as an experiment where only the thickness changed from 4/8; practice it 5 times as a separate example.

Using 1234 as an absolute formula for every front around

The creator's number definitions and the conditions of that layout come first. Even if the name sounds like the front-around ball system on our systems page, don't swap their numbers into each other.

Memorizing only the 3/8 thickness and skipping the other conditions

If the tip position or the entry direction changes, the cue ball's path changes too. Note the layout, thickness, tip position and motion as one set.

4. Reference layout 5 shots + other example 5 shots

Shots 1–5: Repeat the reference example at 1:15 and record the first-cushion error.

Shots 6–10: Write down the conditions of the 4:00 example from scratch and repeat it.

Decide the width of the first-cushion target section before you start. The two examples are different layouts, so don't read the combined result as system accuracy.

In each example, record "done" when the ball enters the first-cushion section you set in advance. Note scoring separately.

Tap a number to cycle: not recorded → hit → needs work.
