Five and a half: remember the numbers as reference lines
Compare the 30, 10 and 50 line scenes and remember the starting point and first-cushion target as a pair.

One thing to remember today
A line is the reference for your first aim. It is not the ball's whole path.

If you lose track of the path because you subtract every time, try remembering frequently used starting points and first-cushion targets as pairs. Yangbbang Billiards lesson 38-3 shows a reference line for each third-cushion value. Here the third cushion is the third cushion the cue ball touches. The 30 line, 10 line and 50 line on screen are names that tell those arrival references apart; they are not the ball's travel distance or a number of tips.
1. Start with the original scene
If playback is blocked or you want to see the scene again, watch from 2:00 on YouTube ↗
The scene buttons jump to the times we checked. Keep watching for the full explanation and the actual shot.
2. Sum it up in a diagram and check the conditions
- Know first
- This is the five-and-a-half relation: start number − third-cushion arrival number = first-cushion aim number. The number spacing at the start, the first cushion and the third cushion is not the same.
- What the line means
- A long dotted line is for reading the reference or aiming at the first cushion. Don't think of that dotted line as the actual path continuing straight after the cushion.
- Spin and speed
- This video focuses on reading lines. Don't make up a specific number of tips or a speed from still frames; check the conditions of the system linked to the source's stroke as well.
- Scope
- Start from a nearby reference line. Don't generalize that shifting every starting position in parallel by the same spacing will work. Long and short starts may need corrections.
3. Follow the steps
Pick only one arrival reference
At first, look only at the 30 line at 2:00. Don't memorize several arrival references at once; pick the one dotted line in that scene.
Point at both ends of the line
Check the end where the dotted line starts and the end that heads to the first cushion. Remember that the cushion contact point inside the cloth and the diamond on the outer rail are different positions.
Check whether it passes through your cue ball
If the line you memorized does not pass through the current cue ball position, you can't aim with it as is. Check the difference between the nearby reference and the current layout, and compare it with the source's applied examples.
Cross-check once with numbers
In our site's five-and-a-half numbering, if you read start 50 and arrival 30, the first-cushion number is 20. This calculation is for understanding the number relation; it is not a coordinate to attach to every dotted line in the video at 2:00.
Check the arrival point yourself
Repeat with the same layout and stroke conditions and record where the third cushion lands. Separate whether the first-cushion aim was already off, or the first cushion was right and it changed afterwards. Add the 10 and 50 lines in your next session.

Memorizing that all the lines in the drawing are parallel
Look at both ends and the starting section of each line separately. Having memorized one line is no reason to apply the same shifting rule to the whole table.
Assuming the 30 line always reaches 30 at the third cushion
A reference line is a starting design. Spin, speed and table condition have to fit, and you need to refine your own reference from the actual arrival error.
A drill suggested by TTBoys
4. Reading reference lines 5 times + actual arrival 5 shots
Reps 1–5: On the 30 line, point at one line at a time and say the start end, the first-cushion end and the arrival reference.
Reps 6–10: Choose only one layout, shoot 5 shots, and compare the actual third-cushion arrival.
The first 5 are reading practice, not a scoring rate. When you add the 10 and 50 lines, record each separately too.
For the first 5, record "done" when you can explain both ends of the line and the arrival reference; for the last 5 shots, record "done" when the ball arrives in the third-cushion target section you set.
Tap a number to cycle: not recorded → hit → needs work.

The second video in the channel's Videos tab sorted by popularity. We checked the description's point about lines for each third-cushion value and the on-screen labels at 2:00 (30 line), 4:00 (10 line) and 6:00 (50 line). The diagram explains the roles of start, aim and arrival; it is not a copy of the source's line coordinates.
