Front around: draw the path before you shoot

Set a first-cushion target before you aim at a ball, then compare the path you planned with the path the ball took.

For beginners · about 15 min of practice · Based on a video by 방수좋아 당구TV

One thing to remember today

Don’t just look at whether you scored. Look at where the ball went into the first cushion.

The cue ball is the ball you strike with the cue, the first object ball is the ball you hit first, and the second object ball is the one you hit last. In a front-around shot, start by setting the role of each of the three balls and the direction the ball travels around the cushions. Watching 방수좋아’s planning scenes, you practice telling the line you read a reference from apart from the line you actually aim the ball on.

1. Start with the original scene

2. Sum it up in a diagram and check the conditions

A TTBoys concept diagram for learning. It is not a measured drawing of the original layout or a physical trajectory; check the exact layout and stroke in the video above.
Layout
The front-around example in the original. Check the distance between the first object ball and the cushion too.
Thickness and tip position
Check them in that layout in the video. This guide does not set one number that works for every front-around shot.
Stroke
Refer to the explanation of a compact motion at 2:00, and keep your warm-up strokes and finish consistent as you repeat.
Where to look
The first-cushion target and where the ball actually touched. Record later cushions and scoring separately.

3. Follow the steps

  1. Set the role of each ball

In the 4:00 scene, point in turn to the cue ball you will hit, the ball you hit first and the last ball. Don’t just memorize ball colors; say each ball’s role.

  2. Say the cushion order first

Decide which cushion the cue ball goes to after it hits the first object ball. Check the path while standing, then get down into your stance.

  3. Tell the reference line from the aiming line

The line you read the rail diamonds on is a line for calculating. Don’t treat it as the line you aim at the center of the object ball; compare it with the actual shot in the original.

  4. Shoot with the motion you set

Once you have set the layout and the aim, don’t suddenly add power partway through; finish the motion you prepared. Watch the 2:00 explanation as well.

  5. Find the first error first

Tell whether the ball was off from the first cushion, or hit the first cushion right and went wrong after that. Don’t blame a missed point on the calculation right away.

If it isn't working, start here

You change the power by watching only the last ball

Compare the first-cushion position first. If the starting direction changes, the later result alone makes it hard to judge the speed.

You aim straight along the line drawn from the diamonds

The collision with the first object ball changes the direction. Keep the line you read the reference from apart from the actual thickness.

4. 10 shots at a first-cushion target

Shots 1–5: keep the same layout, aim and motion, and record where the ball reaches the first cushion.

Shots 6–10: if an error keeps repeating, change only one condition and compare again.

Decide the width of the target zone yourself before you start. Check that you can repeat an easy layout first.

Record a shot as “done” when it reaches the first-cushion zone you set in advance. Note scoring separately.

Tap a number to cycle: not recorded → hit → needs work.
